Feminist AI Lecture Series – Paola Ricaurte Quijano and Alexia Achilleos
22. November 2023 um 17:00 – 19:00 CET
Lecture by Paola Ricaurte Quijano (MX) and Alexia Achilleos (CY/FI) as part of the Feminist AI Lecture Series.
Paola Ricaurte Quijano is an associate professor in the Department of Media and Digital Culture at Tecnológico de Monterrey and faculty associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. With Nick Couldry and Ulises Mejías, she co-founded Tierra Común, a network of academics, practitioners and activists interested in decolonizing data. She participates in several expert committees, such as the Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), the Global Index on Responsible AI and the Expert Group for the Implementation of the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. She is a member of the <a+> Alliance for Inclusive Algorithms and leads the Latin American and Caribbean hub of the Feminist AI Research Network, f<a+i>r. In addition to her academic work, she participates in civil society initiatives to promote digital rights and the development of public interest technologies.
Alexia Achilleos is a Finnish-Cypriot artist and researcher based in Cyprus, with a background in fine art, archaeology and cultural studies. Alexia is interested in the power dynamics that impact history, geopolitics and technology, with a focus on the Eastern Mediterranean. By investigating data and utilising machine learning processes, she aims to re-examine such topics from a local perspective. Her work re-interprets dominant narratives and questions biases found within history and society, but also within AI technology itself, particularly challenging the idea of technology as universal and objective. Alexia is a PhD Fellow at CYENS – Centre of Excellence, undertaking artistic research on colonialism and AI, as well as a Research Associate at MADLab, Cyprus University of Technology.
The Feminist AI lecture series is initiated by the Critical Data research group at Interface Cultures department and the akg (workinggroup for equal opportunities) of University of Arts Linz.
