Das Symposium Understanding Photography befragt die aktuellen Tendenzen fotografischer Praxis und Ausbildung im deutschsprachigen Raum. Der Titel ist ein Verweis auf die Ausstellung „(Mis)understanding Photography“ (Museum Folkwang 2014), in welcher Definitionen von Fotografie anhand von fotografischen Werken und Schlüsseltexten verhandelt wurden. Angehende Künstler*innen und Fotograf*innen orientieren sich über ihre Ausbildung hinaus nicht zuletzt an den Diskursen solcher Formate. Das Symposium Understanding Photography an der Kunstuniversität Linz soll beleuchten, wo die künstlerisch-wissenschaftliche Forschung im Bereich der Fotografie generell und nicht zuletzt an den diversen Hochschulen heute steht. Welche Schwerpunkte werden gesetzt, welche künstlerischen und theoretischen Diskurse machen aktuell Fotografie im Kunstfeld aus?
An zwei Tagen werden internationale Expert*innen aus dem Kunst- und Theorieumfeld, Künstler*innen und Kurator*innen im Rahmen von Vorträgen, Diskussionspanels und Impuls- oder Artists Talks diesen Fragestellungen nachgehen. Die Tagung unternimmt einen Versuch der Kartierung aktuell prägender Fotoschulen zwischen Düsseldorf und Leipzig, Köln und Essen, Winterthur und Wien, Salzburg und Linz, wo jüngst zwei neue Professuren mit Schwerpunkt Fotografie besetzt wurden: Welche Profile bilden sich heraus, welche historischen Linien?
Das Symposium versteht sich als Startpunkt zu einer stärkeren Vernetzung von Akteur*innen im Feld der Fotografie in Theorie, Praxis und Institutionen.

The symposium Understanding Photography investigates current trends in photographic practice and education in German-speaking countries. The title is a reference to the exhibition ’(Mis)understanding Photography’ (Museum Folkwang 2014), which explored the definitions of photography through the analysis of photographic works and key texts. Aspiring artists and photographers turn to such discourse formats to find orientation beyond their training. The symposium Understanding Photography aims to shine a light on today’s position of artistic-scientific research in the field of photography – in general, but also at various universities. What are the priorities? Which artistic and theoretical discourses currently define photography in the art field?
For two days, international experts from the field of art and theory, artists and curators will explore these questions in the context of lectures, panel discussions and impulse/artist talks. The conference aims to map preeminent photography schools between Düsseldorf and Leipzig, Cologne and Essen, Winterthur and Vienna, Salzburg and Linz, where two new professorships have been filled recently: Which profiles emerge, which historical lines?
The symposium serves as a starting point for more intensive networking activities between actors in the field of photography in theory, practice and institutions.
