Feminist AI lecture series: Petra Gemeinböck & Noor Stenfert Kroese

8. November 2023 um 17:0019:00 CET

In a technological landscape, where media discourse on AI is dominated by long-termism and hegemonic male, cis-gendered voices, discussions on the current power dynamics within the global AI ecosystem, and the subsequent impact on society is a main concern. Looking into AI through the perspective of gender and feminist thought, has allowed artists and scholars to interrogate the technology and its surrounding infrastructure through a critical lens, to rethink current structures and processes that define AI technology, but also to speculate on possible AI futures.

The Feminist AI lecture series will present inspiring lectures on gender and AI. Throughout this autumn, the series will bring together a diverse range of lectures by artists and scholars working at the intersection of technology, art and gender, who will present how feminist thinking and intersectional experience has influenced their work.

The online lecture series on Feminist AI has been launched by Interface Cultures / Critical Data and akg – working group for equal opportunities.

8.11.2023, 5 PM – ONLINE

Petra Gemeinboeck (AT/AU) and Noor Stenfert Kroese(NL/AT) will share their experiences on the topic:

What is a feminist approach to working with data and data processing systems? How can we expand our relationships with machines by exploring questions of embodiment, agency and performativity? And what can multiple varieties of entanglement between humans and non-humans contribute?

Please register for the Feminist AI Lecture Series here.

We will rethink together data and data processing systems and will try to understand a feminist approach via input lectures by the following artists and scholars:

Petra Gemeinboeck is an artist and researcher based in Melbourne. Her creative practice seeks to trouble and expand our relations with machines by exploring questions of embodiment, agency, and performativity. Petra is an Australia Research Council Future Fellow and Associate Professor at the Centre of Transformative Media Technologies, Swinburne University, Melbourne, where she leads the Human-Robot Experience (HRX) project. She also leads the FWF PEEK project ‘Dancing with the Nonhuman’ at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Her artworks have been shown internationally, including at the Ars Electronica Festival, Linz; International Triennial of New Media Art at NAMOC, Beijing; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, Liverpool; and Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane.

Noor Stenfert Kroese is a new media artist, scenographer and artistic researcher. From a critical post-humanistic perspective, her works evolve around the encounters between humans and non-humans in spatial performative installations. Noor lives and works in Linz [AT], where she is a PhD candidate in Creative Robotics at the University of Art and Design Linz and University Assistant in the Master’s program Art & Science at the University of Arts Vienna. Her current research focuses on data storytelling of living organisms, fungi-inspired biocomputing and more-than-human interactions with industrial robots.

Noor’s work was exhibited and performed at venues and festivals such as the Ars Electronica Festival (AT), Festival X (UAE), Barcelona Design Week (ES), and Dutch National Opera & Ballet (NL).

She received awards for her work from YouFab Global Creative Awards (JP), New Media Architecture Biennale (CA) and Prins Bernard Young Talent Award (NL).
