Katharina Gruzei is an Austrian artist based in Linz and Vienna.She works in the media of photography, video, film and installation. Within her artistic practice she traces societal tendencies and addresses socio-cultural issues. Another focus is feminist topics and her work in public space, which she mostly implements site-specifically. In her lecture she will introduce her artistic practice and give insights to her working methods. Subsequently it will be possible to take a look at her published monographies and to address questions in a relaxed atmosphere.
Katharina Gruzei studied Fine Arts in the class for Experimental Audiovisual Arts and Cultural Studies at the University of Art and Industrial Design Linz. She studied abroad at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) and at the Berlin University of the Arts in Katharina Sieverding’s class for Visual Cultural Studies.
Her works have been shown in international exhibitions, biennials and festivals. In 2016, she participated in the Moscow International Biennale for Young Art. She had a solo show at the Lentos Museum Linz in 2018 and presented her work at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Japan. Her monography “Bodies of Work” was selected for the Shortlist of the German Book Awards 19/20. In 2020 she had a solo show in the Cabinet of Salzburger Kunstverein and she published her long term project Mir Metro about the Moscow Metro with Hatje Cantz Berlin in 2021. Besides her artistic practice she had been curating and organising projects and panel discussions on the topic of the public space, especially on unauthorized public artworks. In 2022 she organized a project about informal art in public space called “Right Time, Right Place” in New York City. For the project she curated an exhibition at Mana Contemporary and held a panel discussion at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York.
She is the recipient of numerous prizes and scholarships, such as the Ö1 Talents Award, the Local Artist Award of the Crossing Europe Filmfestival and the State Scholarship for Photography of the Federal Chancellery. In 2019 she was resident at the ISCP – International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York. She was awarded scholarships for Los Angeles, Paris, New York, Moscow and Tokyo.
